A passive home in Cleveland's University Circle neighborhood. |
Inanimate objects possess a specific point of view. We form relationships with our things. The more intimately we interact with them, the more we imbue them with our character. Cars and shoes and even money start to look like the people who possess them. Houses are prominent characters in our lives.
Hence, I'm not sure what I expected when I first set out to write about Cleveland's passive homes, which are all about unprecedented energy efficiency. Perhaps I thought the homes would be more concerned about conserving energy than taking care of the people inside. Maybe the houses would be stingy and full of themselves. Instead what I found were incredible living spaces that filled me with breathy sighs at every turn.
Enough already. Judge for yourself.
